And The Tradition Continues!

For as far back as my Halloween memories go, we always went to the Counts' house for dinner, then Maggles and I would go trick-or-treating.  Most people that have experienced my memory would agree that it qualifies as well above average, so I'm talking every Halloween since we were at least 4.  Here's Mags and me as Minnie Mouse, however, I remember Halloweens before this. :)

The year before Mags got married, we decided to show up in Minnie Mouse costumes to surprise our moms.  It was our last Halloween together before we were "all grown up," so Con-Con (my mom) got a little sentimental over this.  There were definitely a few tears, but a lot of laughs as well!

Anyway, along with dressing up, we ate chili EVERY year.  That's about 20 years of chili!  Being in Houston without my Mags this year, I obviously had to carry on the tradition by myself.  When I told Anthony we HAD to have chili on Halloween he didn't really understand.  I mean, Houston is still hot at the end of October, so why would we want to eat something hot?  He wasn't going to step in the kitchen though, so I won. :)  Here's the recipe I used:

Spooky-Kooky Chili (Adapted from the back of my Chili Seasoning!)
  • 1 lb ground turkey (calls for beef, but I like turkey better)
  • 1 cup onion,chopped
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 2 tablespoons Mexene Chili Powder Seasoning (or any chili powder you have)
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 can tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup water
Brown turkey.

Chop onion and mince garlic.

Add garlic and onion to turkey.  Cook until onion is tender.

Stir in remaining ingredients

Cover and let simmer for 30 minutes.

Serve over rice and top with your favorite toppings! I like Fritos, cheese, and sour cream. :)

So even though I couldn't be there with Mom, Mags, and Jackie, I was there in spirit.  Too bad we had absolutely zero trick-or-treaters!  I'm fine with finishing the candy on my own though! :) By the way, does anyone else HATE that they call the Halloween versions of candy "Fun Sized"? What's fun about one bite of candy??!?!!

Love, Sara :)
